What food does your cat need? – A Guide

Find a pet food aisle at the local grocery store, and you’ll find dozens of foods that will appeal to your cat. Feed your cat the wrong diet, and she won’t stay in good health. While the food you feed your cat should be rich in nutrients and balanced, there is no easy answer to how often you should feed your cat.

Some cat owners only feed dry food to their pets. Dry food can be cheaper than canned cat food and last longer. Cats that feed only on a dry diet need plenty of water, especially if the cat has urinary blockages.

Canned food contains nearly 70-80% water and can supplement or replace dry food. Some cats like canned food as compared to fresh dry food. Cats may overeat if you give them a chance. And they may get prone to diarrhea. In many cats, dry food leads to obesity.

Feeding guides are usually mentioned on the food cans according to the kinds of cats. You must read the instructions before you give them food.

Although some cats find dry food more palatable, most cats find wet food more palatable and appealing.

Here is the guide to bulk wet cat food your cat needs.

  • Most cats eat exclusively wet food. There may be many reasons for this. For instance, the cat may be an obligate carnivore that can’t ingest carbohydrates.
  • If a cat eats dry food, he will need plenty of water. But some cats cannot drink a lot of water. So for these kinds of cats, you must provide bulk wet cat food to him.
  • Wet food automatically contains water, so pets don’t need to drink more water.

Your cat needs a proper diet. Diet depends on the cat’s age, and food needs vary.

Kittens:

A kitten of 2-6 months needs food rich in nutrients as they are growing rapidly. The food and nutrition needs will decrease somehow as it grows up to 6 months.

  • A cat that weighs 15 pounds and has a lean body needs up to 3600 calories of bulk wet cat food.
  • A cat that weighs 20 pounds and has a lean body needs up to 440 calories of bulk wet cat food.

The above diet is a per-day food schedule.

Overweight fat Domestic Cats:

  • A cat that weighs 5-pounds needs about 180 calories of bulk wet cat food.
  • A cat that weighs 10-pounds needs about 240 calories of bulk wet cat food.
  • A cat that weighs 15-pounds needs about 280 calories of bulk wet cat food.
  • A cat that weighs 20-pound needs about 310 calories of bulk wet cat food.

Pregnant cats must be provided with their usual diet as mentioned above until 4-5 weeks after breeding, and then the diet should be increased according to the vet’s guidelines.
