How to Travel With Your Dog

Traveling without your dog can be trying because you feel like you’re leaving a family member behind. You also have to deal with the inconvenience of looking for someone to take care of her while you are away. It may feel like a challenge but will let you know how to do it in a safe, convenient manner. You can also find other great tips on our homepage.

  • Invest in a Good Crate

If you are traveling by car, you do not need a crate. However, if you are planning to fly, your dog will have to go into a container. Make sure you talk to the airline to understand the regulations concerning traveling with animals. Different airlines have different requirements, so do your research early. Once you get to your destination, the crate will also be useful in the hotel. The crate should be big enough so that the dog can stand and lie down comfortably. The handles should be strong enough so that you can move it from place to place. The bottom should have absorbent material and be leak proof in case of any accidents. It should also have a place where you can input your contact information.

  • Tag Your Dog

Other than a sturdy collar and leash, you need a proper identification tag so that you can input your contact details. If, by any chance, your dog gets away from you, rescuers will be able to contact you. Ensure you have your destination details and an additional number in case they cannot get in touch with you. It is also a good idea to have a recent picture of your dog in case she gets lost.

  • Have the Necessary Vaccinations

Let your vet check your dog before you embark on a trip. Your dog must have relevant vaccinations and documentation. Carry along any medication that the vet may prescribe. When you get to your destination, identify a vet, you can run to in case of any issues.

  • Food and Water

In the same way you will get hungry, so will your dog. Carry enough water and food, unless you will be able to make stops along the way. If your dog gets hungry or thirsty, she may start to experience car sickness. She will become very agitated, and it will be hard for you to settle her down. Your vet should recommend or advise you on the best kind of food to carry along on a trip. Some foods may cause stomach upset, and you do not want to deal with a sick dog during the journey.

  • Avoid Boredom

Schedule in sufficient breaks along the way, so that the dog can stretch her legs and take bathroom breaks. You will find that traveling with a dog is a lot like traveling with little kids. For the comfort of everyone, you must keep them entertained, well-fed, and happy. It would help if you brought your dog’s favorite toy along to avoid boredom.

Conclusion

Use our guide about when traveling with your dog and enjoy a more pleasant trip
