Things to Note About Brachycephalic Dogs Safety

Brachycephalic Dogs are known for being cute. They include such popular breeds as Pug, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, Pekingese, Lhasa Apso and English Mastiff. And as pet owners, it is our responsibility to remember about the main difficulties these dogs may deal with, know how to eliminate threats to their health and be prepared for everything.

High Risks of Eyes Falling Out of Orbits

One of the most shocking things that brachycephalic dog owner can witness is inability of his pet to blink due to the protruding of one or even both eyes. But of course it is not as dangerous for the psyche of the human as it is for physical health of dog.

The special structure of the skull caused a mismatch in the proportions of the eyes and eyelids of these dogs. Therefore, it creates chances for protrusion of the eyeballs to the outside. The main causes for this are injuries. Predisposing factors include increased intracranial pressure, muscle atrophy, diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems

First aid implies putting any ophthalmic ointment to the conjunctival region (to reduce the swelling with cold) and deliver the animal to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible. Treatment consists in mechanical adjusting of the eyeball and hemming the eyelid.

Collars Worsen Breathing

Aforementioned breed of dogs are known for having Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome. It manifests itself in relatively increased amount of heavy noise they make while breathing. Even as they rest they can make noises of snoring, snorting and/or wheezing.

That is why, in order to avoid making their life difficult it is a must to avoid making them wear a regular collars. Harness will be a much better option, since it won’t restrict the normal process of breathing for your pet.

Overheat Causes Heart Issues

Although pet suits indeed look adorable on someone like pugs, these clothes can be extremely harmful to brachycephalic dogs in comparison to other breeds, if the weather is not cold. Due to the anatomic structure of legs and thick skin they tend to overheat faster. Having a bottle of water with you will help your buddy to cool off during the hot days and as a result have more energy to have fun.
