There are plenty of great performances put on by other drivers whose precious pet sits perched in their laps while the vehicle cruises down the highway. Unfortunately, this practice is unsafe for every passenger in the vehicle; including the pet.
Be a Responsible Pet Owner
Being a responsible pet parent is quite a bit of work. And this is never more true than when trying to plan a trip or organize an emergency.
Having a reliable pet sitter is essential for anyone wishing for their pet to be in their home environment while they are away. The pet sitter will come by and take pets out for walks. All pets do not require outdoor time. For those that are strictly indoors, pet sitters can indulge them in other types of entertainment.
A smart pet owner will make it easy on those caring for pets. They might have used double vanity ideas for small bathrooms so it is easy to fill a pet’s water bowl and keep their food in the cabinet also. The cat litter box might already be in the bathroom, so that will make it easy.
Ask a Friend or Family Member
Having family and friends that are willing to take your pet when you are out of town is not only useful but cost-effective. Not to mention, these people have already been exposed to your pet, and they are less likely to cause them stress. Friends and family may also have a fur baby that your pet is acquainted with as well. This is a terrific option for temperamental pets since they tend to do better in environments they are comfortable and with.
You Might Need Boarding Facilities
Sometimes boarding facilities are the only option available to pet owners. When choosing a facility, be sure to find one that will accept your pet; i.e size, breed, age, etc. It is important your pet receives the time and attention necessary to keep them from harm. For instance, if your pet is a jumper, a covered play area is a feature to look for.
Traveling With a Pet
Traveling with a pet for any distance can be equated with traveling with a small child. Therefore, having a properly restrained pet is essential. What is needed will depend on the size and type of pet. Feline companions may be fine with their carriers, however, dogs may require something more.
Various types of restraints exist ranging from mesh barriers to harnesses that will fit animals of different sizes. Just like people, pets require restroom breaks during long trips. Understanding your pets’ signals for a restroom break will keep you from driving with the window down in the middle of winter.
Not to mention, they will also need an opportunity to stretch their legs. Even small pets traveling in cages will need to get out into the fresh air during the trip.
What Type of Weather Will It Be?
Having a fur coat does not equate to being warm with some animal breeds. Consequently, it would be wise to ensure what your pet needs for traveling in inclement weather. For instance, a chihuahua is not equipped for winter weather. Their coat is simply not thick enough to protect them. They would benefit from an external source to keep them warm.
The same holds for traveling during the warmer months of the year. Animals with long thick coats will need ways of staying cool. This could mean providing more water or cranking up the air conditioner in the car. Speak with your vet before shaving any animal to ensure it is safe to do so. A general rule is that if it is too hot or cold for you to walk barefoot on the pavement (of any type), it is too hot or cold for your pet. Consider booties to protect pet paws.
Remember Some Key Points
Every destination is not pet-friendly. In those cases, you will have to leave your fur baby at home or in the care of others. Regardless of which option is chosen, be sure caretakers know several key things:
- Any medication your pet is taking, including when and how to administer
- Veterinarian name, number, and address
- Secondary contact information for you such as name and phone number for where you will be staying
Of course, boarding facilities may also provide a variety of grooming and spa-like services for pet pals.
Being a pet parent may be hectic at times. However, choosing to bring them along on adventures or leaving them at home should not be.
