How to Look After Your Dog During Winter

A dog is man’s best friend, and we should go out of our way to ensure they remain warm during winter. Most people assume that dogs feel warm during winter due to the fur coat, but they cannot tolerate the cold season.

Below we discuss the top conditions you should prevent in your dog;

  • Frostbite- Frostbite starts when the dog’s fur becomes cold. The body retrieves blood automatically from the body’s center to remain warm. It will help to watch for grey or pale skin as this condition’s main symptom.
  • Hypothermia- is a winter concern that happens after the dog spends a lot of time in clod places. It is advisable to keep your dog free from these conditions to increase its lifespan.

Below we discuss the top tips of caring for your pet in winter;

Take Walks

Try taking your dog for walks in the late morning or evening to enable it to enjoy the sun’s warmth. Spend time outside the house on sunny days since it brings vitamin D to you and the dog. Consider playing fetch with toys to avoid choking.

Limit Outdoor Time

Most pets love to stay outside during winter, but it is not advisable since even the furriest dogs can get sick. It will help to take your dog for walks and shun leaving him outdoors for long when it is cold.

Also, check the dog whenever it is outside to ensure it is not feeling cold.

Install a Cozy Bedding

Avoid letting your dog sleep in cold places in winter and limit its time outdoors to prevent unwanted infections. Using the correct bedding is important to keep the dog always warm.

Warm blankets are advisable since they create a snug place, and raised beds prevent dogs from sleeping on the tiles. Also, put the dog’s bed in a warm place away from uncarpeted floors and drafts.

Keep the Dog Safe from Heaters

Dogs look for heat in the cold weather by moving close to a heat source. Shun space heaters and instead use radiator covers to prevent burns. Fireplaces are also a huge threat, so you should buy a pet-proof system to keep the dog away from the fire.

Do Not Overfeed the Dog

Even though dogs need an additional layer during winter, you should ensure it is made of a coat and not a fat layer. Cold temperatures make the dog lazy, and you should look out for your dog’s attentiveness.

It will help to feed the dog with good quality whole feeds like raw meat diets to promote a healthy coat and energy during winter.

Hydrate the Dog Often

Dogs dehydrate fast during winter, like in summer. Even though most dogs take snow, it does not substitute fresh water. Ensure the dog has enough water if it spends time outdoors.

Final Thoughts

Dogs are an essential part of our lives, and we should apply the above strategies to keep them warm during winter. The above article has discussed the best tips, and you can contact us for more information.
