A curly hair tarantula has a round-shaped body and slightly curved legs. It is a dark-colored tarantula having thick hair bristles over a significant part of the body. They are brown or black, while some bristles are golden. This makes the spider look fluffy and gives it a unique appearance.
The curly tarantulas are ground dwellers and usually remain calm. This makes them a suitable choice for pet lovers. It is essential to take good care of your curly pet for ensuring its overall development.
Here is a list of five ways to ensure the efficient maintenance of your curly hair tarantula.
A Comfortable Enclosure
A tank with a capacity of 5 to 10 gallons can be a comfortable space for the spider. The curly pet isn’t a climber and enjoys a ground space. A tank with a width of at least two to three times the tarantula’s leg span must be suitable.
Putting in a layer of bedding at the bottom makes the enclosure more comfortable. The tank’s temperature must be maintained in the range of 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a heating pad. You must keep track of the temperature and make suitable modifications as needed.
Timely Feeds
You may feed live crickets, roaches, waxworms, and other insects. Take care to ensure that the size of the insect is not larger than that of your pet. At times, you may arrange for a feast by giving a small mouse to the adult spider.
Adults typically need food once a week. But, the spiderlings require feeding every two to three days to support their growth. Simply let the insect enter the enclosure for the spider to catch the prey and eat.
Making Provision for Water and Humidity
The spider procures most of its moisture content from the food. But it would help if you kept a shallow dish of clean water in the enclosure. The dish should allow the spider to crawl in and out with ease.
Make sure to clean the dish and refill it with fresh water regularly. Moreover, you must use a hygrometer to ensure 65 to 70 percent humidity. In case the humidity levels are low, you can spray some fresh water in the tank.
The Cleanliness and Maintenance
Spiders do not feed on the dead corpus. Any food which is left uneaten must be removed from the enclosure within twenty-four hours. The leftover should not be allowed to decay as they can be a breeding ground of microorganisms. Be vigilant to spot fungal growth and remove that portion of the bedding immediately. It is advisable to change the bedding after every four to six months.
Consult the Veterinarian
The tarantula doesn’t typically face any health issues if kept in the right environment and fed well. You must, however, be observant and spot out behavioral changes like lethargy or reduced food intake. You must immediately consult a specialized veterinarian in case of any such symptoms. A piece of advice from a veterinarian in general assists you in looking after your pet well.
Thus by following the above five recommendations, you can maintain your curly hair tarantula in a fit and healthy shape.
