Most new dog owners are worried about their puppy chewing on something they care about, or something that could be dangerous to their dog. If you’re wondering what to do when you’re puppy keeps chewing, we have some tips for you.

Keep reading for tips and tricks on how to stop your puppy from chewing and practicing effective puppy chew training.

1. Pay Attention

This one might seem obvious, but if you’re having dog chewing problems, it’s crucial to keep an eye on your new furry little friend. A lot of dogs find things to chew on when they’re bored, so paying attention to or playing with them can be a big step in the right direction.

This will also help protect your puppy from chewing on anything that could harm them if their curiosity gets the best of them.

2. Contain Your Puppy

If you have to leave your puppy alone, and you can’t keep your eye on them, make sure they don’t have the run of the house. If you have to pop out for some errands, put the puppy in their crate. If you don’t use a crate, make sure they only have access to one room.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you’re leaving your puppy alone. First, make sure you’re not gone too long or you might come home to a couple of accidents. Second, confining your puppy to stop them from chewing only works if you also put away items they could chew on.

3. Teach The “Collar Grab Game”

At the earliest stages of puppy development, your puppy might chew on you because they think of mouthing as a way of playing. When you reach for them, they get excited, and they want to chew on you.

As part of your puppy chew training, you can teach them the “Collar Grab Game.” For this training, ask your puppy to sit in front of you, and give them a treat for sitting. Then, reach your hand toward their collar, but not all the way.

When you pull your hand back, give your puppy a treat and notice how they react. Reward them more when they stay calm and don’t try to bite your hand.

4. Pick The Right Toys

Despite your best efforts, some puppies are always going to chew. It comes down to making sure they have the right things to chew on. One of the best tips for how to stop your puppy from chewing on things like socks and shoes is to never give them the chance in the first place.

Make sure you pick up toys that are specifically for puppy chewing. Keep inappropriate items out of reach. This way, your puppy will learn what they can and can’t chew on.
