How to Store Dog Food: 5 Simple Tips

Are you looking to stock up on dog food for the long haul? Is worrying about the next days starting to feel like a full-time job? You’re not alone!

As conscientious pet owners, we can’t help but worry about keeping our furry friends well-fed and healthy even under tough circumstances. A good-quality food can help give dogs the nutrition they need to flourish, but good luck figuring out how to store dog food to avoid spoiling! Additionally, for those looking to provide their dogs with some long-lasting chewing enjoyment, considering options like braided bully sticks can be a great choice to keep them occupied and satisfied.

To help you out, we put together 5 simple tips. Read on and let’s get started.

1. Choose the Right Container

Picking the right container for your dog’s food is the first step toward maintaining its freshness. Airtight containers made of durable materials are your best bet. These containers keep out moisture, pests, and odors.

Make sure the container is appropriately sized to accommodate the amount of dog food you purchase. This prevents overcrowding, which can lead to food spills and contamination.

2. Keep It Cool and Dry

Finding the right spot is crucial when storing dog food. Aim for a cool dry place that’s away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and humidity. Extreme temperatures can degrade the food’s nutritional value and potentially spoil it.

Avoid storing the food in the garage or basement. These areas can be prone to temperature fluctuations and dampness. Instead, consider a pantry or a closet in your home.

3. Seal the Bag Properly

If you prefer to keep your dog’s food in its original bag, make sure to seal it correctly after each use. Many air dried dog food bags have built-in resealable strips to help maintain freshness.

If the bag doesn’t have this feature, you can use clips or even heavy-duty tape to seal the bag tightly. Rolling the top of the bag before sealing it can also help prevent air and moisture from getting in.

4. Practice Fifo (First In, First Out)

When caring for a dog, you don’t want their food to get stale. To prevent this, adopt the “first in, first out” principle. When you buy a new bag of food, place it at the back of the storage container and move the older bag to the front.

This way, you ensure that your dog consumes the older food before it has a chance to lose its freshness. Regularly check the expiration dates on the bags and dispose of any food that has passed its date.

5. Be Mindful of Treats and Supplements

Aside from your dog’s main food, you might have treats, supplements, or other goodies for your furry companion. Just like with the main food, it’s essential to store these items properly.

Treats should also be in airtight containers to maintain their crunchiness and flavor. Supplements, whether should be also stored according to their specific instructions. Some supplements may need refrigeration, while others need to be in a cool, dry place.
