How to Care for an Aging Cat

Aging is part of life for us humans, but what about our four-legged friends? Although cats and other pets often get lumped in with our families when it comes to the love we give and receive, what is the practical side of taking care of an aging cat?

Preparing yourself and your aging cat is an important part of having a long, happy relationship together. Keeping your cat healthy and happy can give you many years together.

So, what can you do to provide the best experience for your furry friend? Today, we’re sharing our pet care tips and tricks with you. Keep reading for more information!

Have a Good Diet and Access to Fresh Water

One way to help your aging cat feel their best is to make sure they have a nutritious diet and access to fresh water. Talk to your veterinarian about which food is best for your cat and make sure to always have fresh, clean water available.

Older cats may not be as active as they once were, so they may need fewer calories. But they still need high-quality protein and fats to maintain their health. Help your aging cat stay hydrated by adding water to its wet food or investing in a water fountain.

Keep Their Litter Box Clean and Accessible

As cats age, they can become more susceptible to health problems, and a dirty litter box can contribute to those problems. Scooping the box daily and changing the litter regularly will help keep your healthy pet happy.

Also, you may need to provide your cat with a litter box that is easier for them to access as they age and become less mobile.

Provide Them With Plenty of Toys and Scratching Posts

One important way to care for an older pet is to provide them with plenty of toys and scratching posts. This will help keep them active and engaged, as well as give them a way to exercise.

It’s important to choose toys and scratching posts that are appropriate for your cat’s age and abilities. Older cats may not be able to play as strenuously as they once did, so it’s important to choose toys that they can still enjoy.

It can also help keep their claws healthy and can provide them with a bit of mental stimulation.

Give Them Lots of Love and Attention

Cats are social creatures and love attention, even as they age. As your cat gets older, it may become more vocal in its demand for affection.

Be sure to give them plenty of love and attention, including petting, grooming, and playing. If you have a multi-cat household, pay special attention to the older cat to ensure they are getting the care they need.

They may also enjoy a warmer sleeping spot and generally prefer to be around people more than when they were younger.

But, as your pet ages, we need to prepare for the heartache of losing your feline friend. If you want to keep your pet close to your heart, click here to learn about cat cremation.
