5 Ways to Stay Cool During a Heatwave

A heatwave can cause discomfort in addition to having negative impacts on your mental and physical health. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to keep yourself from overheating during these events. Discover 5 savvy techniques for staying cool during a heatwave below.

Unplug Heat Sources

Appliances such as dryers, dishwashers, and ovens as well as other electronics such as lights can make your home hotter. During a heatwave, avoid using these electrical devices during the warmer part of the day.

Washing and drying your clothes early morning, reducing the number of incandescent light bulbs you use, cooking in the evening, and choosing recipes that do not require a long cooking time can enable you to benefit from your electronics while staying cool.

Drink Lots of Water

Keeping hydrated is very important during a heatwave, as your body expends a lot of energy in trying to keep you cool. Water is an essential nutrient, and you need lots of it during warmer weather. Try to drink at least 4 extra glasses of water each day in addition to your normal water consumption during a heatwave.

Keep in mind that you could opt for drinking juice, mild tea, milk, or soup instead of water and still give your body the extra hydration that it needs during a heatwave, simply skip the processed sugar in your drinks to give your health an added boost.

Dress Sensibly

Heat stress caused by environmental heat can lead to death, injuries, and illnesses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to affecting how you feel about yourself, clothing can have a big impact on your body temperature. To keep cool, choose lightweight clothing that is designed to not trap heat around your body instead of heavy clothing that traps heat.

In a nutshell, avoid covering yourself up irrationally during warm weather and wear comfortable outfits that do not interfere with your body’s natural cooling system!

Control Indoor Temperature

During a heatwave, your office or home can become very uncomfortable. There are a few tactics that you can use to control your indoor temperature. For instance, you can cover your windows with blackout curtains to prevent at least some of the outdoor heat from entering your dwelling , use your HVAC unit, stay in the lower sections of your building because hot air travels upward, soak your feet in cold water, take cold showers, or go for a swim.

Use Plants

Plants can actually make your home or office cooler as they add water into the air through evapotranspiration. You can choose attractive plants such as areca palm, aloe vera, ficus tree, and fern to stay cool. As this technique is environmentally friendly, is cheaper than using air conditioning, and removes the impurities in your indoor air, it is a great way to handle a heatwave!

So there are several tips for managing the next heatwave. While these methods are relatively inexpensive, they can definitely help you to stay cool.
